Our Mission
As an independent, non-partisan research institute based in Baghdad, our mission is to assist Iraq in its transition to a modern market economy by promoting reform based on sound research and case studies. Among our goals, we seek to structure a system of formal property rights, and to assist in the development of an effective civil society by promoting vigorous public debate among stakeholders about the future of Iraq.
Importance of the Institute’s work
Iraq is receiving significant international aid from governments and international organization. Effective allocation of funds require reliable, on-the-ground information and critical analysis to ensure optimal resource allocation. The Institute provides independent and reliable data and analysis about the state of Iraq’s economy.
Combining expertise to address key economic issues
The private sector, government, and international organizations need accurate statistics and a critical assessment of the performance of the national economy. In addition, there is a particular need for shaping the public and political debate, about whether to continue, abolish or modify the monthly food ration, and whether and at what pace to privatize State Owned Enterprise (SOEs). IIER brings together an international group of economists, academicians, businessmen and other professionals to address these and other challenges and to educate the general public concerning economic reform.
On-the-ground research
Statistical surveys are conducted along with analysis of such surveys, forecasts, sector analysis, project appraisals and policy recommendations. Research may include the following areas: living standards, labour markets, government and the economy, and globalization and trade. Within these categories, the work spans the full range of economic issues, such as trends in wages, welfare reform, labour market problems, budget, taxation, fiscal policies, healthcare, education, the consumer price index, rural and urban policies, province-level economic development strategies, trade and global finance, comparative international economic performance, and the environment. The outcome of the research is disseminated to the public via journals, issue briefs, popular education materials, and various other publications as well as through media outlets and seminars.
IIER’s impact on private sector development
The work of the Institute will help to lead Iraq’s economy toward better practices that will contribute to political stability. The private sector can utilise the Institute’s work to achieve optimal resource allocation. This in turn will reduce unemployment and increase the national income.
